Indigo Buntings

One day in late April I glanced out my sewing room window and saw these kind of brownish colored birds. They were small, and then I saw a little blue on them. I took a few pictures, and really could see the blue in the pictures. I decided they must be Indigo Buntings; however, whenever I had seen these birds in the past, they had always seemed to be just a brilliant blue.

They seemed to enjoy feeding on the ground most of the time.

And as time went on, by early May, they were definitely getting more blue. In reading about them I discovered that they are really a grey bird with irridescent feathers. The shades of brown could be from molting or perhaps because they were a first year male.

Finally, one day, I saw the brilliant blue that I had previously seen.

They seem to be friendly little birds who didn't mind sharing their lunch with this little Chipping Sparrow.

Love Birds - A May Wedding

This May our family was blessed by the marriage of our son to a truly beautiful and precious woman. Not only that, but we will also be privileged to be as grandparents to two delightful young girls.

We were thankful that our daughters and their families who live out of town were able to be with us.



And, we were especially thankful that my parents were able to be there. My mother is 93 and my father just turned 97. Mom had been seriously ill during the spring of this year. God willing, they will be celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary in November.

The New Woodpecker in the Neighborhood

There are lots of woodpeckers who visit us regularly--

The Red Bellied



The Hairy (such a sweet bird),

and his almost look alike, the Downy,

and, of course, the Pilated, who you can always find (or hear) early each morning hammering away in his favorite tree.

But this summer we were visited by the Red Headed Woodpecker.




He only stuck around for a couple of days.

I guess he was on his way to someplace else!

Yellow Throated Warbler

This is the second year this little fellow has briefly
visited my yard.

He doesn't stand still for long.

His song has often alerted me that there is a different bird outside.

As I looked at my pictures from last year, it appeared that his body was slimmer and longer,

or is it just my imagination? Maybe just a colder day this year and he had his feathers fluffed out.

A beautiful bird to watch and listen to. I hope he comes back.
