Seeing "RED"

Earlier this year
I was overjoyed with the prospect
of having a Bluebird family
nesting on our property.
As some of you may know,
the nest box was raided,
probably by raccoons.
Although I have continued to
to see a Bluebird occasionally,
I do not know where they are nesting.

HOWEVER,
we have been blessed
with an abundance of RED birds.
The Cardinals and the House Finch
seem to be raising some pretty
big families this summer.

As soon as the sun peeks
through in the morning,
they are checking the feeders.

Their bright, red feathers
glisten in the sun.

Cardinals, must have really good eyesight,
because they seem to notice me
on the inside of the window
and quickly fly off.

But this is certainly one, handsome guy!

The Finch and Cardinals often eat in large groups,
and I have enjoyed watching the young ones
begging their parents
to put that seed in their mouths
when all they need to do is bend over
and pick it up.

Breakfast is served,
so dig in!

God bless your day!

In Honor of Fathers!

What would we do without our Dads?

They watch to make sure
their babies are safe.

They see to it that their young ones get fed.

This is in honor of a couple
very special Dads in my family.

First, my own Dad.

He shared with me his love for animals
and was also probably the reason I enjoy photography.
He was a dad who played with me,
and was never too tired to take me and my friends
someplace and then pick us up again.
He was a man of faith and worked hard,
and I was blessed to have him with me
until he was almost 98 years old.

God also blessed my life with another special man.

Some called him "Daddy"

Some call him "Grandpa"

But I call him "MINE"
My Precious Husband!

Happy Father's Day!

Some Sad News

It was a happy sight, just a few days ago
when I saw that both parents
were taking food to the nest.

I was amazed how quickly they came back
with their beaks filled with some
"tasty" critter.

HOWEVER,
when I looked out my front door
towards their nest one morning,
I could tell something was not right.

The door to their house was hanging down
and all we could find was the
empty nest on the ground
a few feet away.

I am so disappointed.
We need to find a better way to locate
our Bluebird box.
I had a really nice one a few years ago
put on top of a pole
and those "nest raiders"
took the whole birdhouse with them
when they left.

I must say, though, I feel very blessed
to have been able to watch the
Bluebirds for as long as I did.
They definitely "brightened" my days.

Lunch Time

After seeing a Bluebird
fly in the nest a few times
as we drove out of our driveway,
I decided to stand like a statue
and see if I could get a closer picture.

Unfortunately, he saw me.

He continued to fly around,
but always came back with that
poor worm dangling from his mouth.

I think he was getting a little impatient,

but kept flying closer to the birdhouse.

Finally he flew down.

And lunch was served!

Getting Ready for Mother's Day

Over the last several years,
there have only been a couple of times
that I have seen Bluebirds in my yard.

The weekend before Easter,
I did see a couple of them hard at work
preparing a nest.

Getting those twigs to fit can be really frustrating!

Maybe going in backwards
will do the trick!

Much to my disappointment
after that Saturday I did not see them around.

But this last week,
this beautiful guy has been sitting
on a branch close to our feeders.
He always seems to sit on the same branch.

                          And the Good News is
"I have seen a bluebird go into the nest."
Maybe it will be a "Happy Mother's Day!"

American Tree Sparrow

This is a bird that winter's here in Indiana.

For some reason, I don't see many Sparrows,
but I think this one is especially beautiful.

I think I was getting "the look!"

Or did that mean "the food is almost gone?"

Have a "Blessed Day!"

Is This a Sign of Spring??

The snow is finally melting,
The sun is out, and so is someone else!

This youngster must have decided
it was time to end his "long winter's nap"
and check out his beautiful world!

Or was he just checking for food?

"What makes you think
I was eating your bird food?"

This is kind of a "balancing act."

"I think she wants me to LEAVE."

"Sure hope I can find my mother."

A Bald Eagle -- Never Seen One Here Before!!

This evening as I was sitting in my living room,
I saw a huge bird flying through the trees.
My first thought was that it was a big owl.

I finally spotted where it had landed,
and grabbed my camera.

At first, I had no idea what it was,
but I got a lot more excited
when I saw that "white" head.

I had heard that Eagles were coming back
to Indiana, but I had never seen one here.
What a nice surprise!!

Guess Who Came for Lunch Today?

While I was having lunch today,
this beautiful creature landed on a nearby branch.

Perhaps I should mention
that it was looking directly at
all my bird feeders.

I guess we know what kind of lunch
he had in mind.

At one point,
I think he might have seen me.

But my presence did not seem
to bother him.

Opps -- Where's his head?

Did I mention,
I'm not sure what kind of a Hawk this is?
Maybe a juvenile Red-Shouldered Hawk.
Let me know, if you have another idea.

Have a Great Day!!
