Baby, It's Cold Outside

Winter has formally appeared.
Some snow, wind and sub-zero temps,
and some hungry birds
sporting their fluffy, winter coats/feathers.

This pretty Mourning Dove
usually prefers to eat on the ground
but flew up to our deck to eat.

This sweet little Titmouse
was swinging in the breeze.

We were also visited by a small flock
of Pine Siskin.

 A number of Goldfinch
were also anxiously looking for food.

And, of course, the Woodpeckers
were taking turns at the suet feeder.

It can warm up anytime!!!!!

Breakfast for Two

Don't usually see two of this bigger birds dining at the same time.
I had just hung out the feeder only moments before.
I guess they were waiting for me.

The Red-Headed and Hairy Woodpeckers

Guests for Dinner

One evening about a month ago my husband and I were carrying our plates to sit down at our kitchen table, and this was what we saw:

I immediately said to Jack, "Take my plate and don't move."
This trio of Baltimore Orioles were originally
attracked to my Hummingbird feeder.

Before sitting down to eat, I quickly cut apart some oranges
and placed some on both of our decks.
For the next couple of weeks I could see them
eating out of two different windows.
In previous years I was lucky if I saw them on two days.

Such beautiful birds!
However, some of my local birds and some visitors
were not at all impressed.

Taking turns didn't
seem to be in the
Oriole's vocabulary.

Even a few harsh words didn't help.

Finally the Rose-Breasted Grosebeak got a little creative.

And they ended the day as Friends!

Hope the Orioles come back next year...and bring their wives along.

Headache or Bad Hair Day?

"Could this be a headache
or has the thought of becoming a father
feaked me out?"

"Maybe it's just a "'bad hair' day."

"Hey look....I can hang upside down just like the Woodpeckers!"

The New Woodpecker in the Neighborhood

There are lots of woodpeckers who visit us regularly--

The Red Bellied

The Hairy (such a sweet bird),

and his almost look alike, the Downy,

and, of course, the Pilated, who you can always find (or hear) early each morning hammering away in his favorite tree.

But this summer we were visited by the Red Headed Woodpecker.

He only stuck around for a couple of days.

I guess he was on his way to someplace else!

Morning Has Broken

As the sun slowly rose yesterday morning,

the whole world seemed to sparkle with the

brilliance of diamonds.

Everyone and everything seemed to be watching in awe

The Birds.............

The Squirrel.................

My Bird Watchers, Nehemiah and Ezra ............

....and, of course, me.....
It reminded me of a hymn I learned in
school a long time ago.
For the beauty of the earth, For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth, Over and arnound us lies,
Lord of All to Thee we raise - This our hymn of grateful praise!
