They seemed to enjoy feeding on the ground most of the time.
And as time went on, by early May, they were definitely getting more blue. In reading about them I discovered that they are really a grey bird with irridescent feathers. The shades of brown could be from molting or perhaps because they were a first year male.
Finally, one day, I saw the brilliant blue that I had previously seen.
They seem to be friendly little birds who didn't mind sharing their lunch with this little Chipping Sparrow.

Wow!! I want your your birds to visit my feeder!! How delightful that you have indigo buntings visiting you so often that you get to watch them molt and turn that awesome blue!!

Hi. I'm stopping by via Kelly's blog Red and the Peanut. When I saw your comment about God's imagination when he designed painted buntings, I thought, "That's my kind of birder." I think that so often about how blessed we are with all the different species of birds. Nice to "meet" you. :)
