A Big Bird to Begin 2012

We were gone for about six weeks, and it took a little while for birds to start returning to my feeders, and slowly the usual Titmouse, Chickadees, Nuthatches and a variety of Woodpeckers have come back.

However, yesterday I saw something large flying through the branches of the trees in the valley behind our home, and it actually landed in a tree within my view.  I believe it is as Broad-Winged Hawk.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you, Kelly (Red and the Peanut).  I believe you are correct that it is a Red-Tailed Hawk.  I was looking more at his head and chest and completely overlooked those red tail feathers.

He seemed to enjoy resting..

...and preening

and just looking around in every direction.

Perhaps he was looking for lunch.

Maybe he even saw me too!

I was so glad he stopped by.

What a thrill not only to see the hawk, but to be able to photograph him and share with us. Happy New Year, Janice.

...he's beautiful! Janice...I'm not sure, but there's a chance he is a Red-tailed Hawk. His tail looks reddish through the shadows and that white chest and speckled belly makes me lean toward Red-tailed. Glad you were able to photograph him! Happy New Year!

A beautiful bird and I agree that it is a red-tail. How nice that you got his photo! We have a hawk hanging around here, but I haven't gotten his pic yet. Somehow they always find the houses where all the little birds are hanging out for breakfast...providing a meal both for the little birds and them :-)

Beautiful hawk pictures, Janice. BUT---don't be too happy he was there.. He loves to EAT the little songbirds---so I hope the hawks stay away from my feeders/home.... Great pictures though... They are gorgeous birds.
Hugs,
Betsy

It is always a thrill to see a hawk! I love them. So majestic and beautiful. Thanks for your comment today. Just wanted to let you know - the CD I have of the song 'Come to Jesus' actually has it titled: Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus) by Chris Rice. It is one of my favorites for sure!
